L ipari is an Italian island belonging to the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands in Sicily. The Aeolian Islands are located off the northern coast of Sicily and are:

Lipari , Vulcano , Panarea , Salina , Alicudi , Filicudi , Stromboli . Furthermore, the Aeolian archipelago has five islets: Basiluzzo , Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca , near Panarea.

The island of Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian archipelago; it has an area of ​​37.60 square kilometers and is 24 nautical miles from the Sicilian coast. Its inhabitants called Liparesi or Liparoti are about 9,000 and also populate the other hamlets of the island: Canneto, Acquacalda, Quattropani and Pianoconte. With the exception of the island of Salina all the other islands are administratively dependent on the municipality of Lipari. All the islands are of volcanic origin. The morphological and territorial characteristics, given the presence of volcanoes, of the Aeolian Islands are the object of study and interest of the largest volcanology centers in the world.

Seven islands defined "the seven pearls of the Mediterranean", where the incomparable nature, beaches, coves, caves, inlets, stacks, are added to the incomparable variety and richness of sea beds, in addition to the various historical, geological, and volcanological aspects of seven thousand years of history.

The Acropolis of Lipari is of unprecedented beauty. The castle, the cathedral, the Greek museum, the Etruscan tombs, the bishop's gardens around the Cathedral, the archaeological excavations dating back to the populations of the Neolithic, those of the early Metal Age, the Bronze Age and the Hellenistic age. It is unthinkable that such a small island could contain a riot of history and naturalistic beauties ...

Based on an international treaty known as the Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted in 1972, UNESCO has so far recognized a total of 1052 sites (814 cultural, 203 natural and 35 mixed) present in 165 countries of the world [data updated to September 2016].
